Boston Prepares For The Most Spectacular First Night Celebration

A little cold weather in the forecast isn’t going to chill our plans to head out for this weekend’s spectacular New Year’s Eve celebration. Bostonians know the only way to ring in the new year on the last night of 2017 will be at First Night Boston. From a Chinese drum troupe in Copley Square to a sax quartet at the Boston Public Library, this year’s lineup of events is looking better than ever.

Boston’s First Night celebration started in 1975 and has been one of the most anticipated events in the city each year. From artistic performances, entertainment and special attractions to cultural and musical performances, ice sculptures and light displays, it is the most fun way to ring in the new year.

On Sunday, the events get underway at noontime and continue on through midnight. For kids and families, check out the puppet showplace theater being held at the Boston Public Library, grab lunch at a nearby restaurant on Boylston Street (Abe & Louie’s, The Capital Grille, The Bristol and Bar Boulud are all just steps away). Trinity Church will be hosting a Handel & Haydn Society Jubilee Concert at 2 p.m. or you can check out an organ concert at the nearby First Church of Christ, Scientist.

At 3 p.m., WGBH begins its live broadcast from the Newsfeed Cafe inside the Boston Public Library and the real excitement begins at 6 p.m. with the opening ceremony from Mayor Marty Walsh and country sensation and Massachusetts local Jessie Chris. There will be a procession from Copley Square to Boston Common where fireworks will get underway at 7 p.m.

There will be a pipes and pops concert at Old South Church at 8 p.m. followed by a performance by Dutch ReBelle in Copley Square. If you can’t make it over to the waterfront for the spectacular midnight fireworks display, there will be a First Night countdown in Copley Square complete with pyrotechnics and light show.
