Over the past two years, people have relied heavily on technology to get us through business meetings, doctor's appointments and daily communication. So much in fact that one can say we have experienced the "Zoom" boom! As the commitment to our digital devices continues, it is important to understand how the increased digital screen time can affect our eyes. Here Haute Beauty expert Dr. Ami Shah Vira discusses how one can avoid any possible effects, this is what she had to say:

First, don’t rush out to buy those expensive blue-blocking lenses. There is no data that demonstrates the blue light from these screens harms our eyes. What they are good for is diminishing the effect blue light has on our sleep cycles.

Still, too much time with digital devices can cause problems. Digital eyestrain often leads to dry eyes and puts an extra burden on the muscles that help the eye focus. Also, the eyes do not blink as frequently when looking at digital devices, which causes faster disruption and evaporation of the film of tears that protects the surface of the eye. That can cause minor eye irritations such as burning and stinging.

To help avoid digital eye strain and maintain more comfortable vision while using digital devices try these tips:

  1. Take frequent breaks while using digital devices. Use the 20/20/20 rule: For every 20 minutes of usage, look away for 20 seconds and focus on something 20 feet away.
  2. Use artificial tears or lubricant drops to relieve symptoms of dryness.
  3. Reduce overhead lighting to minimize screen glare.
  4. Keep your eyes an arm's distance away from the screen.
  5. Increase the text size on devices to see screen content more easily.
