The temperatures in New York have recently been fluctuating and we know our skin is paying the price. It’s difficult to keep up with a proper skin care regimen when the climate can be so unpredictable, which is why we reached out to an expert! Christina Hardial, lead therapist at Bamford Haybarn Spa at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridgeshares five tips and tricks for managing your skin during the wintertime and how to transition into spring.

What is the proper order of layering skin products?

Apply toner on freshly cleansed skin. Follow with prescribed serum, then moisturizer or cream then always an SPF! Eye cream can be applied last to keep your eye area hydrated.

What are the top 3 products you need to achieve optimal skincare?

Hyaluronic acid serum or moisturizer, Vitamin C for brightening and help with hyperpigmentation, and something to exfoliate your skin geared towards your skin type. Freshly exfoliated skin will ensure you are getting the full benefit from any product.

What are the main concerns people express regarding their skin in the winter?

Dryness – Which most of the time is actually dehydration which is a lack of water. When your skin is “dry” that is when you aren’t producing enough oil or sebum.

How do you transition your skincare from winter to spring?

Go for a more lightweight consistency of the product that you are already using, and then reduce the layers that you applying to your skin.

What tips and tricks can you offer to help to reduce oil/dryness experienced during the day?

For those who are oily, products such as facial wipes to remove oil, blotting cloths work as well. Products that have salicylic acid, niacinamide, or yeast are also going to help control your oil production. For dryness (dehydration) – toning throughout the day, a facial mist, and increasing your water intake will keep you hydrated. If you’re going to the spa, book a facial to cleanse skin and restore hydration, like Bamford’s Bespoke Facial, which is customized to meet the skincare concerns of individual guests.
