Dental bonding, or tooth bonding, is a cosmetic procedure in which a tooth-colored composite resin is applied to one or more of your teeth. It’s a cost-effective solution because it’s considerably less expensive than other cosmetic dental procedures, like crowns and veneers. If you’ve been considering repairing dental bonding, but aren’t sure if it’s right for you, here’s a breakdown of the process, possible risks, and associated costs with tooth bonding.
HB: What is Dental Bonding?
Dental bonding is a straightforward cosmetic dental procedure to repair broken or discolored teeth. The process begins with your dentist using a shade guide to choose the right composite resin that matches the color of your natural teeth. The surface of the tooth is then roughened, and your dentist then applies a liquid that helps the bonding agent to stick to the tooth.
The composite resin is then applied over the liquid and your dentist then molds the tooth. Ultraviolet light is used to hardens the material. If necessary, your dentist can then further shape the tooth after the resin hardens.
HB: Why have Dental Bonding performed?
Patients with broken or discolored teeth are usually the best candidates for bonding. Bonding can also help patients who are unhappy with gaps between their teeth. In addition, tooth bonding can also increase the size of a tooth. For instance, if one tooth is noticeably shorter than the rest, bonding can create a more symmetrical appearance to your smile.

HB: How long does the procedure take?
Bonding is a relatively fast procedure without downtime. If you don’t require anesthesia, you can resume your normal daily routine immediately following the procedure. Typically, tooth bonding takes between 30 to 60 minutes. Some appointments may take longer depending on the extent of the procedure.
HB: What are the risks?
Dental bonding doesn’t have any major risks. However, the composite resin used isn’t as strong as your natural teeth, so you do need to keep that in mind. Although rare, tt’s possible for the material to chip or separate from your natural tooth. Bonded teeth can chip if you eat ice, chew on pens or pencils, bite your fingernails, or chew hard food or candy.
How Much does dental bonding cost?
The cost of tooth bonding depends on the extent of the procedure, where you have it done, and most importantly, the dentist’s expertise. On average, dental bonding costs $300 to $600 per tooth. You’ll also need to replace the bonding about every 5 to 10 years.
HB: How to Care for Bonded Teeth?
Taking care of your teeth will extend the life of bonded teeth. Make sure that you continue to brush twice a day and floss. Also, avoid eating any hard food that could crack the resin. Finally, if you drink coffee or tea, opt to drink through a straw to avoid staining.
