Ruby Barker Shares Her Routine On Maintaining Healthy Curls

Barker was recently featured on Vogue’s Texture Diaries, a space for Black people across industries to share their journey to self-love and how accepting their hair plays a pivotal role in that process, where she discussed how playing Marina Thompson, her character on the popular show, has aided her in fully loving her hair.

Growing up, Barker often agonized over the hair process that all curly-haired women can relate to – the detangling process. Paired with the constant jokes she would receive from classmates, Barker turned to chemically straightening her hair.

She eventually cut her hair short and found routines on how to take care of her hair through YouTube, as well as gaining a confidence boost from I Love My Hair!, a children’s book by Natasha Tarpley. After landing her role on Bridgerton, Barker realized the capability of her hair through stylist Tania Couper.

To maintain hydration, shine and bounce within her curls, Barker uses a variety of different products. She begins her curly hair routine by using SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen and Restore Conditioner, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner, and Camille Rose Natural Curl Love Moisture Milk. She also uses Algae Renew deep conditioner and Kelly MacPepple hair and scalp oil – which aids in restoring natural shine, adds beneficial vitamins and minerals to the curls, and promotes hair growth.

Barker shampoos her curls on a weekly basis, using a wide-tooth comb and a generous amount of conditioner to detangle her hair in the shower. She then applies a leave-in conditioner and oil, then either places her hair in a protective style like French braids or allows her curls to air dry.
