2022 is right around the corner and ushering in a new year is always an exciting time as we set ambitious goals to achieve. We often view the coming of a new year as a chance to wipe the slate clean and start over. We make resolutions, which means nothing more than deciding what to do or not to do. In a perfect world, we would break all our old habits and adopt a healthier and happier lifestyle.

Well, if it were that simple, then we would not be part of the surprising statistic that over 90% of New Year’s resolutions end in failure.

We sabotage ourselves and place too much pressure on ourselves as we set unrealistic goals that seem unattainable. We tend to look at the endpoint without calculating how to get there. Human nature dictates our desire for instant gratification, without putting in the effort. Unfortunately, that is the main cause of failure. No one is entitled to take the easy road. Hard work and effort yield long-term results that you will be proud of.

I always explain to my patients that baby steps are a necessity. I explain to patients that it took years, however old they are, to get to where they are at, and to reverse the negative changes, that will not happen in a week or a month. It will take several months and years, but progress will be seen on a daily basis. When I explain this simple fact, patients are prepared to embark on their journey to wellness, and this involves fitness and aesthetics, mental, emotional, and sexual well-being as well.

How can we make our resolutions attainable?

First, focus on what you want to achieve. Do not be audacious. Keep it simple and set small goals. For me personally, all my goals or resolutions center around my 4 pillars of health. Yes, you have heard me mention these before, but the 4 pillars are my keys to success and consistency in life.

Focus on eating cleaner, exercising regularly, sleeping sound, and reducing stress. Managing these 4 pillars will differ from person to person, but the general message is that if you focus on these, you will feel good and look good. It all starts from within and radiates outwards. Inner health and outer beauty are intrinsically connected. Do not ignore one while focusing solely on the other. Create harmony in your life. Set daily regimens and make your habits discipline. Sustainability is key in maintaining the synergy of the mind-body-spirit.

You got this. Happy holidays to all!
